After their professional split in 2024, Apostolos Tsitsipas returns to Stefanos’ team with a redefined and more controlled role.

After his opening match at the Madrid Open, Stefanos Tsitsipas spoke to tennisnews.gr about the return of his father, Apostolos Tsitsipas, to his player’s box.

Apostolos made his return to Stefanos’ team during the Monte-Carlo Masters, marking their first collaboration since their professional split in August 2024. Since then, Apostolos has been present at Stefanos’ matches in Barcelona and Madrid as well. Stefanos clarified that we’ll be seeing more of his father during the European tournaments, as Apostolos now also works with other players across Europe.

Notably, Apostolos has recently launched the International Tennis Coaching project, aiming to support young players and bring major events to Greece. The initiative kicked off with two Challenger tournaments at Lyttos Beach in 2025.

Although Apostolos is back with the team, Stefanos has set clear boundaries this time to maintain control—a lesson learned from past experiences.

“He mainly wants to be at tournaments in Europe because he’s also working with a few players here. His role is that if he spots something in my game or something that he feels needs improvement, he communicates it to Kerei (Kerei Abakar, Stefanos’ coach from Mouratoglou Tennis Academy, and his main coach during the clay season), who then passes it on to me,” Stefanos explained.

“It’s much more under control now because in the past, things sometimes spiraled out. I’m trying to make him feel important within the team but through a structured process,” he added.

On His Win Over Jan-Lennard Struff

Stefanos also shared his thoughts on his hard-fought win over Jan-Lennard Struff:

“It was an important win because toward the end, I was battling really hard to find an edge. It all came down to the returns—who would raise the level first and find the right shots. I managed to do that a bit better. I think Struff rushed at times and made some unforced errors, which helped me.”

Finding His Serve Again

Tsitsipas noted that his serve, which had been problematic throughout the clay season, was a key factor in his victory:

“I think my serve was my best asset today. It’s been troubling me lately, but over the past few days, I finally found my rhythm.”

On His Back Injury

After withdrawing from Barcelona due to a back issue, Stefanos confirmed that he is feeling healthy again:

“The back is good, thankfully. Not once during the match did I feel any discomfort.”

Next Up: Lorenzo Musetti

In the third round of the Madrid Open, Tsitsipas will face Lorenzo Musetti, who defeated him in Monte-Carlo just two weeks ago:

“It’s going to be a big match. I hope to serve better and apply more pressure compared to our last meeting.”
